The lake is situated at a small town called Moirang which is 39 km away from Imphal, the capital of the state. Imphal is well connected with the other mainland Indian cities via land and air transport.
The Lake which is famous for its salient feature-“Phumdis” was declared as a wetland of International Importance under theRamsar Convention held in 1990. Later it was also designated under the Montreux Record after three years in 1993.
The Phumdis is basically a heterogeneous mass of vegetation, soil and organic matter at various stages of decomposition floating over it. The Keibul Lamjao National Park is situated on one of such phumdis. The park is the one and only natural habitat of the endangered deer Cervus eldi eldi, more popularly known as Sangai in local language. The movement of the deer looks like they are dancing among the Phumdis. Hence, the people complimented them as a dancing deer.
